Holiday Light Safety: What the Federal Agencies Say

Four plain rules from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the U.S. Fire Administration, and what each one means for the lights on your house.

Do not chain too many strands

The strand that fails is usually not the first one but the fifth, plugged into the fourth, plugged into the third. The CPSC gives a number for incandescent sets:

Never string together more than three sets of incandescent lights and never overload electrical outlets.

LED strands draw less, and their instructions allow more. Whatever the bulb, read the number on the instructions of the model you have and stop there.

Check the wires every year

Lights spend eleven months in a box and one month in the weather. Pinched and frayed insulation happens in storage, and it is worth a slow look before the strand goes up.

Inspect holiday lights each year before you put them up. Throw away light strands with frayed or pinched wires.

Swap real flames for flameless

A candle on a mantel next to garland is the kind of detail that looks lovely in a photo and worries anyone who has seen a mantel fire. Both agencies say the same thing:

Use flameless candles whenever possible.

The U.S. Fire Administration adds that battery candles have come a long way:

Consider using battery-operated flameless candles, which can look, smell and feel like real candles.

A short checklist

  • Plug every strand in on the floor before it goes up.
  • Outdoor strands into a covered outdoor outlet.
  • Adapters and controllers kept dry, off the ground.
  • Timers set, so nothing stays on all night.
  • Unplug everything before you climb a ladder to fix a bulb.
