Measure, plan, clip. How to get a straight line of big bulbs along the gutter without a second trip up the ladder.

Measure before you buy

Walk the gutter line with a tape measure and write down each run: front, garage, each side you want to light. Then add the distance from the end of the run down to the outdoor outlet. That last number is the one people forget, and it is why the first strand so often ends two feet short of the plug.

Plan the connections

C9 strands join end to end, but each model has a limit on how many can run from one outlet. The rule comes from the instructions, not from the box art:

If the run is longer than one chain allows, start a second chain from a second outlet, or from the other end of the house.

Clips, one per bulb

Universal clips slip under the shingle edge or hook onto the gutter lip and hold each socket upright. One clip per bulb keeps the line straight, so the bulbs point the same way when you look up from the street. A clip every second bulb works on a short run, but the line wanders.

Put all the clips on the strand on the ground first, then climb once and snap them into place in order.

Test on the lawn

Lay every strand out on the grass and plug it in before you carry it up. Replace any dead bulb there, with a spare from the box.

Inspect holiday lights each year before you put them up. Throw away light strands with frayed or pinched wires.

What goes wrong most often

  • The strand ends short of the outlet: add the drop to the measurement.
  • The line sags between gutter hooks: use clips, not hooks.
  • Bulbs point in different directions: turn each socket upright as you clip.
  • A breaker trips on a cold night: too many incandescent strands on one circuit.
